October 18, 2018 is LGBTQ Spirit Day.  The event is sponsored by GLAAD.  I want to challenge everyone to show their support for LGBTQ youth and standing up to bullying.

We are asking everyone to wear something purple on that day to show support for this community.  If you can’t wear purple, you can show your support by using @glaad and #spiritday on your social media on that day.

Another action you can take to show support is to sign the GLAAD anti-bullying petition.  You can find the petition on their website at www.glaad.org/spirit. You’ll be taking a stand against discrimination and prejudice.

LGBTQ youth disproportionately face bullying solely because of their gender identity. Eight out of 10 LBGTQ youth have been verbally harassed four out of 10 have been physically harassed.  Eighty percent of them feel unsafe at school.  Forty percent of homeless youth are LBGTQ.  They are at increased risk for dating violence and suicide.

Pledging to “go purple” on Spirit Day is the best way to show your support and solidarity with this vital community.
